Inspiring Story: Australian-Filipino migrants and Mums raising their new business babies

Mothers, entrepreneurs and migrants from the Philippines, Sarifa Younes, Louella Docot and Malou Villareal were all delighted to win national business awards earlier this year.

The AusMumpreneur Awards presented by The AusMumpreneur Network celebrate and recognise Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation.

Little Rockers Radio founder, Sarah Morrissey, was a judge in the Multicultural Business Category and was completely blown away by Sarifa Younes, Muslim-Filipino, founder of Training College Australia and Arndell Park Early Childhood Learning Centre Australia. “Sarifa was quiet and humble, yet had achieved so much and made such a difference to peoples lives. It was hard not to be impressed with her achievements,” said Sarah.

Sarifa won first place in the Multicultural Business category and in her acceptance speech, she recalls how difficult it was to find a job when she first migrated to Australia, “I’m a mother, a migrant and a Muslim,” she said. Unsuccessful in finding a job, she opened a multicultural learning centre in Melbourne and later a training college for migrant mothers and women with interest in early childhood education.

Louella Docot, founder and director of Kiss Ready, a range of natural skincare products, placed second in the Hair and Beauty business category. Like Sarifa, Louella struggled to find employment in spite of her marketing experience and had to initially work as a fast food service crew to pay the bills. Today, she owns national skincare brands Kiss Ready Lips, Kiss Ready Skin, Kiss Ready Mama and Kiss Ready Baby, sold nationally in Australia and distributed in New Zealand and the Philippines. Malou Villareal, third place winner in Product Innovation, is the founder and director of Baby Loves Sleep, an innovative range of baby swaddle wraps and swaddle transitioning sleep sacks that help babies and their parents sleep better. “It’s been quite a journey, to leave our country of birth and to build a new life in Australia. It’s lovely to be acknowledged and we hope our stories inspire other migrant mothers in business too,” concludes Malou.

Sarah caught up with these inspirational women and asked…

What advice do you have for other Mums who have perhaps struggled to find work in Australia and are thinking of starting their own business?

Sarifa: If you are thinking of starting your own business, choose one that you are passionate about. Your passion will allow you to remain enthusiastic, it will guide your vision and mission; and will direct the growth of the business. When you're passionate about your business, you will enjoy and love what you are doing everyday. You will be tireless, happy and successful.

Louella: Be authentic – to yourself, to your family and your customers. Have a clear understanding of your reasons and motivations for pursuing entrepreneurship. When you are clear about your purpose and values, it will translate to genuine engagement, not just with your family and loved ones, but also with your customers.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started?

I wish I knew how good having a great PR partner is... it speeds up the process of success!

Louella: It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Owning a business will test every aspect of your life – from financial security to maintaining a happy home. The key is to remain resilient at all times; to just keep doing what's on your to-do list and to keep believing “the dream”.

Malou: I wish I knew about all the small business network groups and resources of useful information that are not always easily available to small start-ups.
